Carpet Padding Types and Thickness

We offer just two types of padding for the carpet we sell. First, we offer a 8lb. density and 1/2 thickness padding. This pad is great for a nice thick feel and a cushy walk due to it’s thickness. It also offers the highest insulation rating due to it’s thickness, which makes it a great choice for basements when using a cut pile carpet. The 8lb. density is simply the most dense padding you can get which means your padding will last longer and in turn your carpet will last longer. Plain and simple this is the more luxurious choice with out sacrificing quality.

The second type of padding we offer is an 8lb. density with a 3/8 thickness. We stick with the 8lb. density for the reasons mentioned above. The padding simply preforms better when you stick with the better quality high density pads. The 3/8 thickness is a great choice for patterned carpets or any carpets that have a loop construction. A pad over 3/8 thickness will have too much flex for your carpets and will not allow it to keep a proper tuft bind. That’s just a fancy way of saying, the carpet could pull apart as the loops get tugged from too much flexing.

There are of course many other padding choices. We’ve ruled most of this out for various reasons. For instance, a 6lb. pad feels very good under foot in the showroom. However we know it won’t last as long as it should. It’s like buying a cheap couch that feels squishy and comfortable on day one but after a year or two you’re just sitting on the springs.
